Brag Board—2008

I always thought I was cursed. Godfrey would come home from his duck hunting trips with the bagged limit. He told me all about his fun filled day, how the sky was filled with ducks and geese and that there was never a dull moment. Well, I couldn’t let him have all the fun, I wanted to experience this exciting sport myself. So the next morning he took me duck hunting. I was very excited. We set up the blind and decoys, go settled in then waited… waited... and waited. Would you believe NOTHING, not one duck or goose in the sky! I was so disappointed in fell asleep in the blind. Finally Godfrey was able to call in a mallard, here was my chance. It was coming closer, closer “take it Suzanne, take it, TAKE IT…” bang! Godfrey bend over backwards and shot it. Somehow my jacket got stuck in the fence and I couldn’t raise my gun! I missed my chance. Lesson learned: never sleep in a blind where there’s a fence!

That was the action for that day, come to think about it that was the story on all of my tag along hunting trips.

Now that Godfrey and I have the store we hear a lot of hunting stories. It’s exciting to hear the guys exchange their hunting experiences as well as their shooting tactics. I love seeing the passion in their eyes as they tell them. So once again I want to join in on the action. I want to find out for myself and experience what everyone is so hyped up about.

On April 25th, opening day, Godfrey took me and Tristan (our 9 year old son) to one of his hunting spots where he scouted the morning before and saw lots of turkeys. It was a beautiful morning, cloudy but not too cold. We ended up sitting down on the fence row. Tristan and myself put our gloves and face masks on while Godfrey set up the decoys. Once that was all done we got comfortable and waited. I never realized how alive the forest got so early in the morning. I began to understand very quickly how peaceful it really was.

Godfrey started to call the turkeys with his slate. Nothing. Again, “cluck, cluck, cluck”...nothing. The turkeys should have gobble right away. Godfrey said there were lots of turkeys yesterday morning, where did they go? Oh man, I thought, am I still cursed? Once again, “cluck, cluck, cluck”... Finally in the far distance Godfrey heard a gobble!  He called again, and this time I heard the gobble. I was getting excited, I never heard a turkey gobble before, unfortunately IT WAS FAR.

Twenty minutes went by and Godfrey signaled to me and Tristan that there were three deer in the field just off to the right of us. I have never seen a deer that close before. What an awesome animal. She knew something was not right along the fence line. The doe kept looking up at us, I could feel her stare right through me! She stomped once, then twice, finally she put her head back down and started grazing again. This happened a few times. Thank god I was wearing a face mask because I had a smile on my face from ear to ear.

The time was 6:45 am and still I hadn’t seen a turkey, I had to leave soon to take the kids to school, time was quickly running out. All of a sudden the deer lifted her head, made a loud snort, snorted again, raised her tail and off they went. Just at that moment Godfrey spotted a couple of hens in the distance. He started calling again. Tristan pointed out in the field and sure enough two toms were on the move, coming towards us! They stopped a few times to display their tails and strut around and gobble. Apparently it took the turkeys approximately a half hour to forty-five minutes to come to us, it seemed much shorter than that! Godfrey looked at me and told me to get ready on three. He started to say something else and that’s when the train went by, I couldn’t hear what he was saying then all of a sudden I heard “..2, 3, SHOOT!”. Godfrey and I pulled our triggers at the same time and down went the toms! What a rush! A double header! All of us immediately got up and ran towards the turkeys. What an awesome hunt! I guess my curse if finally broken! Thank you Godfrey for that great time, can’t wait to go again!
